One of the souls behind the Soul Bonanza blog with Genki Arai, Hide is a tropical aficionado of the early hours and a prime supporter of the scene. His taste in this genre is impeccable as proved by his exquisite selection below.

Jazz Krontjong

One of my favorites, I found it in 2014. Amazing instrumental Krontjong from Indonesia with vibraphone “a la Mulatu”. I hope we can feature more Asian tropical music mixes from Japan, Okinawa, Thailand, Indonesia or Vietnam on our Soul Bonanza website in 2015.

Ayalew Mesfin
Ewedish Neber

ayalew mesfin

“Ayalew Mesfin is always outrageous. Here is another rare and super heavy ethio funk tune by the master, backed by the Black Lion Band. I actually got this 4 years ago but never got tired of it.”

I recently had a party with DJ Frank “Voodoo Funk” Gossner in Tokyo. He played loads of funky highlife from Benin City, Nigeria called Edo Funk and it blew my mind. How should we call this tune? Edo Reggae? This killer LP also contains the famous Sofrito classic “Ohue”.

Heavy afro-colombian sound a la Los Soneros De Gamero. Savage, Infectious bassline!

Massive Kenyan gospel sound. A traditional Kukuyu choir but it’s very fresh and groovy. Can’t wait for the next Kenya Special compilation.

One of their nicest 80s songs with some hints of Milton Wright’s best melodies. Classic!
