This LP is one of the latest good news arrived from Cuba: this All Stars orchestra goes back to the good old mambo, to give a version faithful to the spirit of the origins, without being just a poor copy. At the beginning of this adventure, the producer Jacob Plasse returns on the genesis of this combo, somewhere between New York and Havana.

How was this orchestra born? Did you discover it or just set it up? tell me the beginning of the story…
Mike Eckroth, whom I had worked with on previous projects and is the arranger on this album, played me some of the less well-known music of Beny More and Perez Prado, and I became obsessed with it; I realized that this music was the apotheosis of so much music I loved – son cubano, Arsenio Rodriguez, Duke Ellington and guaguanco. Pepito, a good friend of mine who would sometimes play in my son group Los Hacheros, and I began taking some of his tunes and figuring out how they might be reconfigured for this instrumentation. At the same time I began writing tunes with Mike Eckroth, which we would then send to Pepito to write the lyrics. The process felt very organic and like we were discovering something new together.
We tried to record a couple songs in New York, and though these recordings were encouraging, they didn’t quite have the magic that I thought the music deserved. Pepito was going to Cuba to play with Pupi y los Que Son Son, and he thought we could record the tunes there, which to me felt like a pipe dream that would never happen due to the logistical difficulties. But slowly we began ironing out the details with the help of Pepito’s childhood friend, Cesar Lopez (saxophonist from Irakere), who did an incredible job corralling the crème de la crème of Havana’s musicians to be a part of the recording.

You did not put any violins, cello, in that band… So any reference to the typical charanga. To focus on wood and sax, what does that change in terms of sound, energy ?
We were intent on focusing on the sound of brass and saxophones with percussion- the sound of mambo. You will notice that even the piano and tres parts are played pretty sparingly so that the focus can be on the brass, sax and percussion. There is an elemental energy when you combine these sounds, it has an energy and sound like nothing else – it somehow reminds me of early punk rock.

At the center of the orchestra there is José Pepito Gomez. Can we talk about a leader?
Pepito has always been one of my favorite singers. He is able to combine the sound of many styles and eras of latin music into a singular voice, and it was an honor for me to have him as part of the project. I would be hard-pressed to tell you who the leader of the band is; it’s the result of Pepito’s, Mike’s and my combined efforts in bringing this project to fruition, and the amazing artistry of the Cuban and New York musicians who brought the music to life.

How was built – written – the songbook?
All the songs are original, but we tried to keep a stylistic cohesion to the album so that it really brings you into a sonic world of its own.

Who decided on the choice of guests, including Cesar Pupy Pedroso?
Me and Pepito discussed it a lot, and while it’s always nice to have stars perform on an album, it was more important that whomever the guest was really understood the style and intent of the music. And we were so lucky to get Pupy to perform, because besides being a legend and incredible innovator of Cuban music, he understands the lineage and history of the music as well as anyone; his father and uncle played with all the greats as well.

In the short presentation for the press, you talk about the influence of the 50s, Perez Prado, Cachao or Arsenio Rodriguez …. Yet the album makes me think especially of Beny Moré … An influence so essential for Akokan?
For sure! This album was inspired by all the artists you mentioned, but Beny More and his band is for me the pinnacle of Cuban music; and it’s hard for me to describe his music, except to say he did what Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong or James Brown did for American music – through his vision and musicality Beny combined the folkloric and popular musics of his day into something wholly new.

The mambo is of course very present, but we also hear other styles, as salsa dura. Why this thematic choice, a kind of old school taste. A reply to the current timba and salsa played those days?
It was important for us to not be trapped into replicating the past, but figuring out ways to express our lives within this particular sonic world; we love the sound of mambo, but it has to be true to the world we live in now. But despite the technological advancements involved in recording, I feel that older records sound better, they are more alive and have greater sonic personalities. Most modern salsa and timba recording sound rigid and stale to me, so I tried hard to capture the magic I heard in the music of older albums by researching how they were recorded, mixed and mastered.

What are the songs talking about? Cuban news or love story? From mysticism to music or more down-to-earth realities?
The lyrics are very much true to Pepito’s personality, as he wrote them all. And they run the gamut – love, fame, betrayal, santeria rituals, and double entendres galore.

Can we talk about a revival group? And how is this record (band, repertory) still souring «modern»?
While I agree that there is a definite affinity with older albums, I don’t think this is a revival group in any way: we play entirely original repertoire, and we have many modern musical elements. You can hear this in the way Pepito soneos have the cadence of salsa dura, the way in which La Corbata Barata ends in a McCoy Tyner-esque jazz sound or in the modern wide open harmonies of the intros to songs like No Te Hagas. There is a vintage sound to the production, but that is because I love the way old recordings sound and feel that is the best way to express our musical ideas.

You have chosen to record in the studio of Egrem (Areito), and not in Miramar for example. The warm mood of the wood? The big main room on the first floor? The vibrations of the old sessions done here? Is this choice an essential factor in the success of the album?
I think the choice of Egrem is essential to the recording, for the reasons you mentioned. A huge room, the wood, the ghosts of the legends of Cuban music.

How long have you been recording?
I’ve been learning about recording for about a decade, and with every album I realize how much I still have to learn. With the recording of this album, I began to think more about how so many different contexts were intersecting and reacting in the music. When you listen to ‘Dolor Carabali’ by Beny More for example, on one level you are listening simply to a beautiful piece of music. And as a musician you can consider how the harmonic, rhythmic and melodic choices guide the listener through the singers story. As a recordist, you begin to hear what choices were made in placing the musicians in the room, and how reverb and other effects were used to create the haunting nature of the recording. And as someone interested in history, you can hear how cubans, and particularly afro-cubans, express their lives through their music, through their interpretation of rhythm and harmony and interaction with the other musicians. And this is what I find so fascinating about the music, that through studying all these different lenses you can glimpse into the interior lives of a people in a time and place that no longer exists.

Why not publish this record on your label, Chulo Records?
That was my initial idea, but then I presented the album to Daptone. As we talked, it became clear they had a strong vision for how to present the album, and it seemed like a natural fit. They were so wonderfully supportive as soon as they heard it. What is so great about Daptone is that they really care about good music, and are very thoughtful and caring about how they present the music to an audience.

As one of the figureheads of the golden age of modern Ethiopian music, Mahmoud Ahmed has led an extraordinary life. Starting out shining shoes and working odd jobs in a nightclub, his first moment in the spotlight came about almost by chance at the beginning of the 60s and since then he has piled success upon success, most famously with the eternal classic “Ere Mela Mela”. A look back at an interview from 2002.

Your music seems heavily influenced by African American culture. What were your initial influences?
Right at the beginning my first influences were Ethiopian singers, people like Tefera Kassa and Tlahoun Gessesse who were in Haile Selassie’s Imperial Body Guard band before me – not forgetting Alèmayèhu Eshèté of course, the Ethiopian Elvis.
At the beginning of the 70s I ran a record shop. I used to listen to an independent radio station called “Voice of the Gospel” and watch a lot of films, and through them I discovered singers like Sam Cooke, Nat King Cole, Harry Belafonte, Little Richard and James Brown. I remember seeing Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock” at the cinema – what a lesson! I learned a lot by watching how they acted on stage.
Theoretically they all made very different styles of music but ultimately it is all based on the blues – the same for me too. I took parts of soul, rhythm’n’blues, rock and jazz to create my own sound. The most interesting for me was the huge variety of rhythms coming from America.

At the same time other musicians elsewhere in Africa were creating their own new styles that were influenced by American funk, soul and jazz. Did you know about Fela?
No, I only heard about him much later! was lucky enough to meet Myriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela when they came to play in Addis Ababa, and I began to see the connections with South African music. I could hear a certain similarity with urban Ethiopian music before the revolution in 1974, similarly for the music of Mali, Guinea and Senegal. The rhythms of the Sabar drums and what we call “Martinique beats” are very familiar to us. It’s natural – you have to understand that in the south of Ethiopia there is a lot of music that is very similar to Black African music: dorzé, waleyta, etc… I am from the Gouragués tribe, known for their great voices. But in the 60s we mostly had access to Sudanese, Nubian, Egyptian and Yemeni productions. Paradoxically, despite the fact that the emperor Haile Selassie was one of the founders of the OAU (Organisation of African Unity, precursor to the African Union), we had very little exposure to other African cultures. For example I never participated in FESPAC, and when we played in Kenya or South Africa it was always just shows for the Ethiopian community.

We often talk of the golden age of Ethiopian music, what is the current scene like?
It’s true there was a golden age, the emperor financed the big orchestras and they were real institutions. That was my school, it was where I started my career when I was a last-minute replacement for a singer in the Imperial body guard band. At the beginning of the 60s the body guard band dominated the Ethiopian scene. From the beginning of the 70s the big bands began to lose their best players as they left to form their own smaller groups, but it was with the military dictatorship in 74 that things really took a downward turn – the big orchestras weren’t what they once were and nothing really took their place. Nonetheless the quality of the arrangements – what marked us out – lasted despite the economic difficulties and political censorship.
There are still arrangers in Ethiopia today but they aren’t organized and as there are aren’t any long-running orchestras left the work is piecemeal. It’s down to economics – no-one wants to invest in an orchestra, not even the government! It should be up to the ministry of culture to help us and encourage a renaissance of the arts. We can’t rely on producers, they are only interested in short-term gain.

Your music takes on another dimension in concert…
Concerts are fundamental. That’s where the audience is and where I can best connect with them, especially when I’m touring abroad where the conditions are very different from those in Ethiopia. In Addis Ababa I mainly play for private parties but in Europe and the United States I play at major events. The audience doesn’t always respond in the same way. In France the audience is very knowledgeable, like connoisseurs, but whether the audience understands the lyrics or not I don’t change my set. The main thing is to feel the music beyond the words.

Before being half of the duo Kon & Amir, label manager of Wax Poetics and boss of 180 Proof Records, DJ Amir is first and foremost an accurate record collector and music lover. That’s why, on the occasion of the reissues of Strata pioneering spiritual jazz LP’s at BBE, we asked him to go back, on his story as a digger, but also on the history of the mythical Detroit label.

When did you start digging records?
I started digging seriously for records probably around 81’ or 82’ but I started collecting records way earlyer than that.

What LP’s did you buy at first? Do you still listen to them?
The LP’s that I started buying when I began my journey into collecting records were Stevie Wonder ‘Innervisions’, Grover Washington Jr. ‘Mister Magic’ and ‘Inner City Blues’, and any James Brown records I could get.
I still listen to all of these records. It’s funny a lot of people think that record collecting is all bout finding and listening to just the rarest records on the planet. This is so not what I am about. I love music (cue in The O’Jays) common and rare!

Do you have a particular style or favourite period?
I guess my favorite period of music is definitely the 60’s and 70’s of music ; everything from jazz to soul to funk to disco. For example, I love not only hard bop jazz but also jazz fusion. Whatever the music genre it has to have some complexity that still keeps the essence of funk from the soul.

Are you still digging, buying vinyl, visiting record shops?
I am definitely still digging and collecting vinyl. Although, not as much as I used to because as I have gotten older life and relationships start to become more important then digging all day everyday. However, when I can I am going to record shops more than online. I find that shopping online doesn’t give me the same exciting feeling as actually going to a record shop.

What was your first release on 180 Proof Records?
My first release on 180 Proof Records was the previously unreleased Kenny Cox ‘Clap Clap ! The Joyful Noise.’ This was released at the end of 2012. By the way, Kenny Cox was the owner and founder of Strata Records, Inc.

Why did you choose this name: 180 Proof Records?
I chose the name 180 Proof Records because it is kinda of a play on 180 Gram vinyl. I wanted my records to be at the highest sound quality imaginable and the packaging to be impeccable.

What could be your editorial/esthetic line?
My editorial or esthetic line is something I borrowed from Strata which is «All Musics For All Peoples». Basically, the sound that I am trying to bring to the world is for everyone that has a heartbeat.

What could be the label’s leitmotiv?
The leitmotiv that best fits what Strata was all about is their moniker «The Sound of Detroit». They tried to represent the sound of Detroit in the best way possible.

You talk about mission about the rediscovery of Strata Inc.. A heritage mission? Memory? Inheritance?
My mission to rediscover Strata began when I was running Wax Poetics Records. I had contacted Lyman Woodard to reissue his Saturday Night Special album and he lad me to Barbara Cox the owner of Strata. Also I was commissioned around the same time to create an online exhibition for the Scion iQ museum that centered around lost youth culture. I decided to submit something on Strata and I was accepted.
My mission is to bring the history and legacy of Strata to not only the world but also to the Black American community in America that may not know about the legacy of labels/movements like a Strata Records. For example, how Strata was not only a record label but also an artist collective based on the idea of an artist run and controlled label. They also founded the first jazz music program at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio in 1970 and started community food based drives in Detroit.
Strata came out of the insurrections as most Detroiters call the riots of 1967 and 1968. This lead to a revolution in art, culture and politics. I definitely feel it is my inheritance and duty to tell the story of Strata !

About Strata Inc label, you had evocated a catalog which includes 30 unreleased masters in addition to the label’s 6 official commercial releases. Will you publish that?
The catalog of Strata I will definitely be publishing once I have gone through all of the masters. It is very expensive to transfer and remaster original reel to reel masters. In addition, it is also has been very difficult researching certain masters and artists because there has been little to no information on the original master tape.

Remember the day you listened to Strata’s first album? What a feeling?
I certainly remember listening to my first Strata record which was the Lyman Woodard Organization ‘Saturday Night Special’ album. At the time I knew about Strata Records but had not heard any of the records. It just so happens that I had a friend who wanted a rare hip hop promo 12” of Common Sense aka Common ‘The Bitch in You.” I traded my Common 12” for a mint copy of the Lyman album. When I first heard the album was blown away by the soulful and funky grittiness of the album. The grooves were so infectious that it instantly became one of my favorite albums.

Strata is emblematic of a 70’s jazz scene. What were its characteristics? And what differences with nowadays?
While Strata is very emblematic of the 70’s jazz scene there are definitely some differences. For example, not many jazz labels whether independent or commerical were community based artists collectives that focused on the revolutionary nature of art and culture. Not many labels were able to approach colleges and universities to propose starting a jazz music program or open their creative space so that local artists could come to rehearse or perform.
Morever, Strata was dedicated to the upliftment of the Black community of Detroit. As I mentioned before, Detroit suffered through two riots which devasted the city.The first riot is 1967 was caused by the constant harassment and killing of Black people by the Detroit police. This lead to a severe crack down by the National Guard in which several people were killed. Then in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated and like many inner city Black communities Detroit erupted. The assassination of Dr. King also birthed the creation of the Black Panthers as well as other political and social movements like Strata.
Nowadays, jazz has become marginalized by mainstream America and has lost a bit of its edge and ability to speak to the youth. There are some examples of those who are trying to ‘push the envelope’ in jazz like Kamasi Washington, Gregory Porter, or Thunder Cat. However, for the most part, jazz does not hold the weight cultural and artistical that it used.

Strata East is best known, and yet Strata was created before. Charles Tolliver even says that this was the exemple which served them. How do you explain this lack of recognition in the official jazz sphere?
I think the lack of recognition of Strata in the official jazz sphere stems from the lack of releases. Unfortunately, they were only able to release 6 albums. Strata East I believe has over 50 releases or more. I know some of the biggest jazz record collectors that either not heard of Strata or do not know the difference between Strata East and Strata.
Furthermore, Strata East was able to do records with the likes of Gil Scott-Heron, the Heath Brothers, and Shirley Scott to name a few. Being able to have such jazz heavyweights record with Strata East definitely helped to cement their legacy as one of the great jazz labels.
Lastly, just being based in New York City also helped Strata East gain access to more funding as well as the artistic talent.

Kenny Cox was at the creation of the label. What were his motives at the time?
As the creator of Strata Records, inc., Kenny Cox was motived to create an artist collective based on self-reliance and pushing forward the art and culture of jazz. I don’t think Kenny saw Strata becoming something with a cult status. Most artist and labels never envision this. They just create from the heart and soul.

Was there a vision, an objective, a political one?
Again, the vision and objective of Strata was to create a movement based on artist collective based on self-reliance and pushing forward the art and culture of jazz. In addition, I firmly believe Kenny was trying to elevate the Black community of Detroit and America as a whole.

Detroit is a big city on the map of Great Black Music. How do the different scenes that compose it dialogue together? And do you think Strata Inc. is a good example of their eco-system?
The different music scenes in Detroit worked somewhat well together. For instance, many of the artists that recorded with Strata were musicians that played on a lot of Motown records. For example, Larry Nozero actually played the horn on the Marvin Gaye song ‘What’s Going On.’ Also Lyman Woodard was the musical director for Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.
Additionally, there was a lot of collaboration between labels like Tribe Records and Strata in Detroit. Both shared the same goal of self-reliance, community uplift and artistic freedom. Labels like Strata are a perfect exemple of the eco-system of the Detroit music scene. Hence, why Strata’s moniker was ‘The Sound of Detroit.’

The young DJs of Detroit still remember these rich hours?
There are some young dj’s in Detroit who remember the legacy of Strata but it is really the older dj’s like Theo Parrish, Moodymann, Juan Aktins, Carl Craig and others that remember Strata legacy the most. Mainly, because people like Moodymann have worked with some of the Strata artists like Norma Jean Bell. I remember when I first met Theo Parrish almost ten years ago and he was surprised that I was the one that reissued the Lyman Woodard ‘Saturday Night Special’ album through Wax Poetics Records. He was excited to talk about how he grew up listening and following Strata as a child.

Why and when did Strata Inc. stop?
Unfortunately, Strata closed its doors in 1976 due to lack of money to continue to run the label. Like most independent labels, when your distributor doesn’t pay you on time or at all it is very hard to keep things running.

Do you have other ideas for reissues, other than Strata Inc.?
I definitely have other ideas of labels that I want to reissue but for now I am keeping that a secret !

There are more and more reissues of old LP’s, and more and more record labels (major or indie) now release their new artists on LP, or EP. Do you think that the LP reissue market could ever reach saturation point?
I do think the reissue market is beginning to reach a bit of saturation but labels like myself that continue to not only release great music but also educate and evelate music will always survive.

Have you received many negative answers on some of the LPs, artists, unreleased tapes, you were trying to reissue?
The only negative feedback that I have received from some of my releases is that I have made some of them double vinyl. There have been some people complaining that they have to get up to turn over the vinyl too quick and that the high quality that I present my releases is really for the bourgeoisie not the masses. You cannot please everyone!

What is the LP you dream of reissuing?
The LP if it ever does exist would the project that Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, and Tony Williams supposedly recorded. It is also rumored that Jimi had asked Paul McCartney to join them on bass. That would be the ultimate release for me!

When did you start digging records?
Around 1987-88, digging for rap records when those were badly distributed in Paris.

What Lps did you buy at first? Do you still listen to them?
Jazz funk and funk classics, first record ever was Herbie Hancock’s ‘Manchild’. I still buy and listen to 70’s classics, those are the real deal, not the super obscure stuff I’ve been collecting for the past 20 years.

Do you have a particular style or favorite period?
60’s hard soul and early 70’s deep funk.

Are you still digging’, buying vinyl, visiting record shops?
I dig on a regular basis but not in stores, try to link up with private owners, collectors, buy cheap and in large quantities.

What was your first release on Oriki ?
Orchestre Baobab’s ‘A night at Club Baobab’.

What is the Oriki LP you are prouder?
Baobab’s : it’s our biggest sales and media hit (about 15.000 copies sold) and it’s surely one of the most consistent African bands of the 70’s, ultimate work .

Did you have any references labels when you started ?
Not at all, I always do my stuff with the heart and don’t buy or listen to reissues. I also barely know what’s being done by other labels.

Do you think the adventures of diggers have changed over time? Do you keep going to the field?
I don’t really know what you mean with the first question, my work as a digger remains the same, go to the field, hunt intensely, discover new stuff, keep eyes and ears wide opened, never give up even if it’s the 10th mistaken lead I’m following.

Your first references were on the West African zone. Is it still easy today to find rare, unedited records?
There is more to do than done, always… Question is how relevant some reissues would be.

And how do you negotiate with the right owners?
Patiently!

You have released some Brazilian records, and you are known as a great connoisseur of this country. Why not more reissues?
Most of the relevant stuff is owned by majors which don’t allow licensing.

Could we dream to listen on LP the fantastic Obaluayê!?
All dreams are possible, but I won’t do it, worked on that on cd 15 years ago, changing the format is not really challenging, and I need the project to be so to get interested in doing it.

Can you introduce us to the new Ivorian selection? Its particularity, its difference compared to all the others that come out on the market?

I’d say it’s more interesting than most stuff out there for three reasons.
1-It’s super obscure, ultra hard to get and extremely expensive stuff which you can spend years looking for. Most collectors have a very vague notion of how rarer this or that African record is compared to another, the Société Ivoirienne du Disque funky catalogue is simply the ultimate when it comes to French speaking Africa.
2-It’s a coherent compilation focusing on a single label, and more particularly on what could be spotted as a collection within the label, even though it’s never been marketed as such by the producer. Most tracks have the same funk and fusionny, African American music influenced sound, a lot has the same sidemen and / or arrangers.
3-Finally, a lot of the music has that raw and deep funk vibe, completely unique in French speaking Africa, when it was much more common in English speaking Ghana and Nigeria. The compilation focuses, with a few exceptions, on what I consider to be the ultimate in terms of solid deep funk and jazz funk coming out of Ivory Coast.

Why such a long silence before this come-back ?
Well, the label is my own little dancer, I don’t make profits out of it, which means I need spare time to work on it. I lacked that spare time. Also, when the first releases came out years ago, most didn’t sell enough to cover expenses (I used to buy advertising space in magazines and pay for a press attaché). What customers wanted was the funky stuff and I didn’t specifically focus on that because I thought there was much more interesting stuff to be reissued. Even if this new compilation rocks, most artists included within it have quite anecdotical carriers. Our first reissues focused on heavy weights of modern African music, but I guess Western ears were not ready to leave their funkocentric approach and listen to modern African music for what it is and not for how much it’s been influenced by James Brown or Fela Kuti.

Nowadays, there are many LP labels who follow this model, I mean more quality even if it’s more expensive… but in same time, there are also another « new » LP market, with major companys come-back and other labels, who prefer to sell cheaper. Is it the (re)creation of two camps for the LP ?
Vinyl is trendy, and there are different ways of doing it. Some labels try to make money out of limited quantities, which is impossible, so all they can do is shitty pressings and bootlegs. That really sucks, they should try to get into another business to make profits. Majors have a different, but also opportunistic approach. They sell vinyl records to people who didn’t really give a shit about the format until recently, they just think it’s cool, today, don’t know how long this « coolness » will last. Then there is the passionate, hard working, accurate people doing amazing reissues, deep historical work with consistent liner notes and tracklistings. Those contribute to something bigger than us, universal knowledge and beauty.
But if you’re just into music, you don’t really give a shit about that, all you want is the sound, and from this point of view, anything is good. This discussion is mainly for the passionate professionals, most of the audience is not interested in such considerations.

There are more and more reissues of old LPs, and more and more record labels (major or indie) now release their new artists on LP, or EP. Do you think that the LP reissue market could ever reach saturation point?
No idea at all, but at some point I guess this will happen. Customers into vinyl have limited funds, but I don’t have numbers as to the extent of this market. But frankly, how many thousand copies maximum of a vinyl title are pressed ? Several tens of thousands ? How many people on the planet ? It’s just a drop in the middle of the sea which the music industry is. Mp3 rules.

What are your other next releases ?
No idea yet. When did you start digging records?
Records were a forbidden fruit when I was very young, I wasn’t allowed to touch my parents records at all. But almost overnight they switched to cassettes (K7) and the records went in a cupboard. When I was around 8 years old my folks divorced and the records became plastic orphans! One day I took the LPs and did silly experiments like gluing toy cars to them and playing them backwards or painting them with Tippex or making loops by taping a lolly stick to the platter to make the needle jump, after that I used to ask everyone i knew if I could have their old records. Once I got a bin bag full of ex jukebox records including some early rap like Rhythm Talk by Jocko. I instantly identified with early hip-hop being about record abuse and from then it snowballed. I’m not entirely sure that I even liked music at this point.

What Lps did you buy at first? Do you still listen to them?
My dad had a flat that he rented out. One day a tenant skipped town and left his records behind. There was The Misfits, The Brothers Johnson and The White Album. I think that awkward mix has contributed to my eclectic taste. My first self-funded purchases were hip-hop albums but i almost instantly started buying the original samples… Cymande and Mandrill marked one significant early shopping trip in Manchester. Records were the absolute cheapest form of entertainment. I practically lived on car boot sales in my teens, but i grew up in a very white middle class area so the best i could muster was Funkadelic, George Macrae, James Brown, Bill Withers but i also saw expensive folk and easy listening. I learned to DJ using old turntables and speakers rescued from the tip / dump. Then started DJing at the school discos.

Do you have a particular style or favourite period?
Not one in particular, I would say 1972… but pop music progressed at irregular rates in different countries so it’s pointless reading dates any more. People used to be obsessed with dates but its all changed. I have a few specialist subjects now, Post 68 French concept albums, Turkish pop, female punk, i’d like to add Italian library to that list but it’s becoming progressively unaffordable. There’s no punk attitude in antique collecting.

Are you still digging, buying vinyl, visiting record shops?
Yes, it’s the only thing that keeps me out of the pub. Record digging is like smoking a cigarette for me, it makes me feel secure.

What was your first release on Finders Keepers?
Jean Claude Vannier’s – ‘L’enfant Assassin Des Mouches’ in 2005. Although I did a compilation called Finders Keepers a few years prior to starting the label… and the same people who run Finders Keepers also did a compilation called Folk Is Not A Four Letter Word at exactly the same time. I previously started Twisted Nerve Records in 1997.

Why did you choose this name: Finders Keepers? A kind of double hat?
It’s obviously based on the popular phrase (Finders Keepers – Losers Weepers) but i’m never sure how well that translates globally.
I was a rapper in my teenage years and this was the title of one of our tracks. Boney Votel (Mark Rathbone) and myself basically rapped about digging for records and not much else. There was a bit of arrogance with the age and culture, now I guess the label should be called Finders Sharers but it doesn’t have the same ring to it does it? To be honest none of us have the physical space to “Keep” anything anymore.

What could be the label’s leitmotif?
Well our slogan is “Making Global Sound Local” so I guess that means putting very obscure music in a palatable context (or making it widely available). I decided at an early age to simply stop buying English or American records just as a form of discipline and this turned into a bit of a religion. There was a time quite recently where there was a lot of xenophobia in pop music. For example The annual English TV coverage of The Eurovision song contest was borderline racist year after year. Even since the label started the climate is a lot different, people have alway loved Brazilian (Portuguese) and French language music, but releasing Welsh and Hungarian music 20 years ago seemed insane to some people. The other phrase is “Making Old Record Feel Young” which is also about recontextualising old records (old records that actually sound more progressive than most modern music).

How do you decide on the choice of reissues?
We are at our most successful when we find a recording that is like nothing else in your collection, which is increasingly difficult but very rewarding. People think we make up these absurd genres for fun (Krautsider / Welsh Rare Beat / Turk Jerk) but we genuinely search for records that are free from any pigeonholes. Obviously there is a stylistic thread that involves loud drums, fuzz guitar, primitive electronics and female vocals but as the label gets older these kind of trends, alongside rarity or dance-floor compatibility, become irrelevant. One thing we are passionate about is not physically manufacturing records that are already available which is why we mostly release very rare records by default or totally unreleased master-tapes that have never been pressed before, in this sense we are not technically a re-issue label anymore.

Ten years ago, you did a lot of reissues about Anatolian scene in the 70’s. What motivate this choice ? And what was for you the most amazing artist?
For me ‘Selda’ was by far the best record to come out of that scene. She was well respected by the younger community and all the best musicians assembled to help her create that amazing first LP. I naturally always gravitate to female musicians and there are far less female composers in the the domains of Eastern music (as well as electronic music or library music) but she was special and much more important than the many female pop singers who followed. The synth and saz combination was the huge cherry that tilted the cake. When I first heard Turkish music I was blown away by the incredible FUZZ, it was much bigger than that of Big-Jim Sullivan or Micky Karoli from Can but then I realised it was actually a Saz and not a regular guitar so I was hooked. We also admire that the music scene was in no way reliant on the Western major labels, it was genuinely independent which is rare (even Greece, Pakistan and Israel had labels like EMI and CBS attempting to control the market). We managed to meet all of our heroes in Istanbul within 12 months and they all agreed that it was the first interest they had had from the West EVER! We could have released 50 further Turkish albums but the trend went through the roof and the bootleggers started chasing all the trophy titles and spoiled things a bit. We try not to repeat our selves too much, but i still buy for personal use. About twice a year i do a 5 hour Turkish-only DJ set just to flex that muscle.

You have released also such iranian productions, recorded at the same period. An objective link between those two scenes?
In some rare cases the same songs have come out in both Turkey and Iran, but its mostly the Arabesque stuff as opposed to the Anadolou pop. The main thing with the Persian records were that they were forbidden and often destroyed. The Iranian records have a more bitter-sweet story surrounding them and from my perspective they are more soulful whereas the Turkish stuff is more psychedelic and funky. Googoosh is quite possibly my favourite female recording artist of all time.

And was it difficult to obtain rights for those Lps ? How did you find all the people who owned rights?
Since the start of FK Doug and Myself have always had a wish-list and schedule that would keep us going for the next 5 years so we have never needed to bring other compilers on board. The two exceptions are Chris Menist and then Mahssa who runs the Finders Keepers office in Los Angeles, both of these people are mad vinyl junkies but understand the very important fact that it’s more important to connect with human being as opposed to pieces of plastic. Mahssa is Iranian and her family is part of the Iranian community diaspora in L.A. – The label owners were family friends.

Another part of F. K. catalog is more focused on early electronic stuffs, another global movement, like psychedelic. What is the unity between all those productions, from Lollywood soundtracks to T.R.A.S.E. (Tape Recorder And Synthesizer Ensemble)?
The Lollywood and Kollywood scenes were the poorer cousins of the huge Bollywood industry, so instead of huge orchestras they had to experiment with studio trickery, tape sampling and synthesisers. A lot of those ancient sounding strings are re-cycled off other old tracks which is why you find mono strings agains stereo synthesisers, it’s better if you don’t analyse it but there is a direct common thread between Massiera, Joe Meek and Ilaiyaraaja… in fact there is no difference apart from language, the indigenous influences are arguably the smallest detail. TRASE was a teenage synthesiser inventor, and an uncompromised one-man-band who worked on a pocket-money budget in a home studio… and there lies the unity.

You became one of the experts of French free jazz band avant-garde music developed in France. How can an Englishman dare?
It might sound a bit silly but I very rarely buy American or English records, I much prefer records manufactured in smaller economies. It’s really just a matter of paper and plastic. America has some of the greatest diggers in the world, living in Europe i’ll never be able to compete with people like Dante Carfagna, Johan Kugelberg and Egon on their own turf so I don’t bother. When I got interested in Free Jazz this became difficult so i turned to labels like BYG Actuel, Palm and Futura and then got a bit obsessed. I love the fact that bands like The Art Ensemble added the words “Of Chicago” so they could get gigs in Paris, i believe that France and the Pan African festivals played a huge role in free-jazz providing an appreciation that was not available in America and an unrivalled first hand inspiration for French musicians. I came to these records with French pop knowledge. I first heard Gilson because he worked with Gainsbourg’s drummer Pierre Dahan. I first heard Tusques because of his Jean Rollin films. AEOC via Fontaine. Also France’s history in musique concrete lead to the best electronic jazz music albums like Jacques Thollot and François Jeanneau (from Triangle). In a way French records have taught me about American music. You can also learn a lot by looking at all the people who Don Cherry has worked with on a global scale without having to buy American pressings

What about your collaboration with cult producer Jean-Claude Vannier? And François Tusques?
When i was younger Vannier resembled The French David Axelrod, a few years later Tusques was like a French Mal Waldron. Axe and Waldron were staples of my teenage record collection, so after buying all their records I upgraded to French models. ‘L’Enfant Assassin Des Mouches’ is my favourite album of all time, it was the first record that Finders Keepers released and remains a benchmark for all of our records. He has also become a close friend. It feels like our relationship with Francois might go the same way.

In fact, do you believe this eclecticism of editorial line is a part of your force, of your identity?
Yes, I really don’t understand why people create specialist labels. It seems too calculated, too business-like.
The beauty of an independent label is you DON’T have to act like that. Our goal is for Finders Keepers to stand up as its own record collection which covers a lot of musical bases and hopefully for no two records to sound the same. I also think some FK records, like L’enfant Assassin Des Mouches and Holy Mountain, are almost like entire record collections in just one release. I love the way jazz labels like Futura and BYG randomly released experimental rock LPs like Gong, Ame Son or Jean Guerin’s ‘TACET’.

What is the Finders Keepers LP you are prouder? why?
The eclecticism makes this difficult so i’m proud for different reasons. I’m instantly proud of any album that was previously unreleased, that’s especially gratifying and life affirming for the label. Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders soundtrack and the Czech releases that followed are really important. Selda ticked a lot of boxes. Belladonna and Holy Mountain were both holy grails for the label and it took us 10 years to release them so i’m still very proud of them. We have lots of grails coming out in the next 18 months.

Most of your previous reissued LP’s are sold out. Do you plan to repress them?
Yes. There are just 1 or 2 artists that decided to double their fee so we had to let them go to other labels. And there’s even a couple of bootlegs of our FK albums out there!

You work to release some tapes (K7). On one hand, we can consider that it is still about the vintage mode, on another hand, we can however consider it is the possibility to hear of the other unpublished sounds … Do you feel there is a specific market for that? And don’t you believe there is a kind of irony to publish K7 on vinyle in 2015?
The compact cassette was a great format for all types of DIY music from post-punk to PINA and allowed people to release music without too much financial speculation. If it wasn’t for the cassette a lot of music would have remained in the minds of constipated genius’. Most people we licence cassette masters from comment on how they always wanted to make vinyl but it was unaffordable or they couldn’t get a record deal to pay for it. My friend owns a successful cassette duplication company near my house, he has lots of vintage dead-stock raw material from all over the world, its a treasure trove. I sometime s DJ with cassettes fro special occasions.

Do you still discover a lot of unearthed obscure records these days? Where (on line, record dealers, flea markets…)?
Yes. I try not to buy records that are well known at all and don’t really buy records that Doug or any of my friends have. I’m aware that I have more records than i’ll ever get chance to properly listen too so there has to be certain disciplines. I rarely use dealers or boutique shops unless they are friends who are willing to trade, i don’t do much digging in the UK but i buy records every time i travel and mostly from that specific country. I much prefer messy unorganised shops to showrooms. The best place to dig is other peoples houses, or artists collections (including master-tapes). I also enjoy finding records in my own house, its always a good party trick!!!!

You had published many compilations, selections… Is it harder to sell this kind of issues today ? How do you think the market has evolved on these compilations?
Compilations belong with mix-tapes. They are an important staple in the history of record digging but are now virtually impossible to do legally without losing money, the accounting process is also a long-haul commitment. I was brought up with Ultimate Breaks And Beats and later compilations like The Folk Funk Experience and Nuggets Of Funk shaped the way i continued to buy records. Regardless of legitimacy I still have A LOT of respect for the people behind those releases but sadly that era has passed. I agree that the process has evolved a hell of a lot. I regard the process of finding the artist and knowing their story first-hand as an integral part of collecting in 2016… diggers who release compilations without getting the rights are not doing the full job. Anyone with money can find records in the internet age… now it’s all about the social aspect… in my opinion. From a buyers point of view i think the age of the “tastemaker” has faded along with DJ worship, as a record seller i know that people are no longer comfortable buying into another persons opinion/taste, they prefer to find an original artist and focus on the work as intended… and probably make their own compilations, so FK caters for this need. Today compilations really have to have a very strong concept, or focus on a particular studio or small label or micro-genre. Various Artists DJ friendly pic ‘n mix comps simply don’t sell enough to cover costs.

Have you received many negative answers on some of the LPs, artists, unreleased tapes, you were trying to reissue?
I am very persuasive and always willing to visit people to share our enthusiasm. In the early years people were sceptical… many artists thought we were ridiculing them but when they look at our website and discography they begin to understand that we have very solid relationships with over a 100 artists. The only time when things have not run smoothly is when middle-men or major-label execs have tried to position themselves in the deal. Holy Mountain took ten years to release after Abkco had said NO five times… I just kept asking and asking like a child and offered to send them flowers. They have since thanked us for giving them the impetus to retrieve the masters. Some people just say YES so I’ll go away!

There are more and more reissues of old LPs, and more and more record labels (major or indie) now release their new artists on LP, or EP. Do you think that the LP reissue market could ever reach saturation point?
Yes, when teenage clothes shops are selling £30 180g re-issues of classic records that are already available in charity shops you know you are at saturation point. The fact that small labels who have always been faithful to the vinyl format can’t get any records made for 4 month leading up to Record Store Day because of Ghostbusters coloured vinyl picture discs proves that we are at crisis point. I have known new artists that insist that their music has to be on vinyl, later to find that they don’t even own a record player themselves. I think it’s important to think responsibly when mass producing vinyl. Projects should be era-specific and genuinely unavailable before people add to the pollution. 180g virgin vinyl doesn’t really suit what my kids are taught at school about recycling and protecting the environment.

Price for rare records go crazy these days. What do you think of this trend?
Vinyl used to be a punk gesture, a throwaway creative format which matched table-topping at buying clothes from thrift stores. Now it’s got more in common with antique dealing. The culture has been gentrified. Sadly i’m addicted to vinyl so i sometimes have to pay through the nose to complete circles that I opened 10 years before the gold-rush… and with this i often think i’m contributing to the problem. But I’m also not going to sell my rare doubles for half the price of everyone else am I?. Its a catch 22.
I know alot of people who have been in this game for 20 years plus, many of whom initiated niche-buying trends in Punk, Library music, Iranian 45’s, dance-floor psych, folk funk, Krautrock and paved the way for further generations of collecting – sampling – and influencing modern music… but nowadays they can no-longer afford to be part of the game. There’s no respect. MAny of these new vinyl antique dealers push the prices up for fun from the comfort of there well paid 9-5 jobs… they remind me of The Duke Brothers in Trading Places. It’s in danger of becoming elitist, less creative and eventually a bit lonely.

What are your next releases?
Unheard out-takes from Jean-Claude Vannier’s ‘L’enfant Assassin Des Mouches’ 1972 session with different arrangements and extra instrumentation. A totally unreleased electronic jazz soundtrack by Swiss composer Bruno Spoerri about Zurich’s Red Light District. The incredible unreleased score to Jess Franco’s Les Demons recorded by French Library cognoscenti. Unreleased Buchla synthesiser exhibition performances by Italian American composer Suzanne Ciani. A comprehensive collection of Italian soundtrack work by trio Frizzi/Bixio/Tempera who recorded with Goblin musicians under the name The Magnetic System. Some mesmerising unreleased new age synth explosions from a Hungarian animation soundtrack. An entire LP of unreleased electronic / mechanical / folk from the UK 1983 version of The Moomins. Some very rare François Tusques music. Some unknown electronic Don Cherry soundtracks…. And a particular unnamed Gainsbourg/Vannier holy grail x 2!!!!

What is the LP you dream of reissuing?
There are so many but it’s probably best to keep them a secret, there’s much more competition now. I’ve been speaking to Francois Wertheimer for almost 10 years trying to release his Popera Cosmic LP, I came to visit him in Paris and he signed our contracts… unfortunately another well known French re-issue label also cut a deal with Guy Skornik (the co-writer) for the same record at the same time so we were stuck in checkmate! For a small fraction of time the music was almost liberated, but I think it might have slipped back into the clutches of a major label now… i really hope not. I think you’d agree that Finders Keepers is a good home for that record. If you don’t know Popera Cosmic well Finders Keepers are trying to Make It Local.
